System administrator / Site Ops Guru
We are looking for an experienced System Administrator to support our team in Hamburg. You will be reporting directly to our CTO Phil, who is from the UK and doesn’t speak any German. You therefore must be able to converse in English effortlessly.
Responsibilities
The Qype community and revenue of the business is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years and this role will be pivotal in sustaining that growth.
Our site operations guru reports directly to the CTO - you will be responsible for the smooth running of all site operations at Qype, whilst dealing with the ongoing challenge of a site growing at breakneck pace.
We have a LAMP stack, using Debian Linux, Apache2/Tomcat/Lucene, MySQL 5, postfix, and Ruby on Rails. The ideal candidate would have experience of all these technologies, with a specialism in one or more of them. Ideally you will have significant experience of managing a high traffic website or similar large scale environment with open source technologies. You will have a relentless focus on performance and availability, and a good grasp of scalable, secure architectures.
The role is very hands-on, and you will be expected to perform most day-to-day operational tasks, including some out-of-hours cover. Our great dev team will also be there to work alongside to build the Qype platform.
Requirements
Experience in all aspects of site operations for a high traffic website or similar, although applications directly from university, given the right candidate, will be considered.
Computer Science / Engineering or similar degree - bachelors or higher
- Analytical and creative in solving performance bottlenecks
- Fluency in one, and good experience at least another of the following technologies: Linux / MySQL / Apache2
- General knowledge of network architecture, routing, TCP/IP, iptables
- Enthusiasm for Web 2.0 sites, online communities including Qype!
- Good at prioritisation and time management
- Self-motivated and analytical thinker; positive attitude, infectious enthusiasm - sees solutions rather than obstacles
- Energised by unstructured, start-up environment
- Hard-working and flexible attitude, willing to answer the phone at anytime
